At this morning’s special meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Dayton Metro Library, the Board declared a “Financial Exigency” and asked Tim Kambitsch, the library’s Executive Director, to prepare a plan to address the budget shortfalls caused by declining state revenues. The plan is to be presented at a special meeting Wednesday, September 2, at 4:00 p.m. at the Main Library. ( details)
The Dayton Metro Library will place a 1.75 mill replacement levy on the November ballot. The library’s Board of Trustees voted to approve the amount at Wednesday’s meeting. The current 1.25 mill levy expires at the end of the year and trustees agreed that an additional 0.5 mill was necessary. ( read more)

New Ohio Budget Includes Significant Cuts for Libraries, but Less Than Originally Proposed
The two year state budget, signed July 17, 2009, includes $84.3 million in cuts for Ohio’s libraries. We are still studying the budget documents to see the exact impact on Dayton Metro Library but it appears to impose new cuts that total $850,000 for 2009 and $1.75 million for 2010. This is in addition to the $3.5 million reduction already experienced this year due to declining tax revenues. In 2008, DML received $18.7 million from the state of Ohio. As it stands now, I believe our state revenue for 2009 will be approximately $14.3 million... Click here to read the rest. |
| The managers of the Dayton Metro Library agreed to give up raises to help meet a growing budget problem. The move will save the library about $80,000. Because of cuts in state revenue, library income will be more than $4 million lower this year than in 2008. Read more about it here. |

The Dayton Metro Library will be closed on the following days in 2009:
- Thursday, January 1st - New Year's Day
- Monday, January 19th - Martin Luther King Jr. Day
- Monday, May 25th - Memorial Day
- Saturday, July 4th - Independence Day
- Monday, September 7th - Labor Day
- Thursday, November 26th - Thanksgiving
- Thursday, December 24th - Christmas Eve
- Friday, December 25th - Christmas Day
- Thursday, December 31st - New Year's Eve
- Friday, January 1st, 2010 - New Year's Day
In addition, the Main Library will be open on Sundays from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. through May 17th. Sunday hours will then cease for the summer months and begin again on Sunday, September 13th through the end of the year with the following exceptions:
- Sunday, April 12th - Easter Sunday
- Sunday, December 20th - Sunday before Christmas Day
- Sunday, December 27th - Sunday before New Year's Day
